In this scene, Paul Atreides, heir to the house Atreides is put through a test of will for the training he has received from his mother, Lady Jessica, who belongs to an order of very powerful women- The Bene Gesserit Sisters.

This scene was, in my opinion, the best in the film for three very impressive reasons. First, the cinematography, the lighting, and the set of this scene add a nightmarish level of tension to it as most of the shots are in darkness, and the meaning behind the setting seems clear- this is a place to be afraid of. More on the cinematography is the camera work. The Bene Gesserit use the power of Voice to control people. In this scene, the Reverend Mother uses her Voice on Paul, which the camera captures as a moment of temporary unconsciousness where Paul fades out for a split second in his standing position only to regain consciousness, but this time kneeling before the reverend mother. It showed their control as swift in the mind of the person under control, which helped to keep and even raise the tension of the scene. The second thing is the acting, Timothee Chalamet's performance in this scene of experiencing sheer pain was captivating to watch. The scene cuts to Lady Jessica, who had already passed the test and is now experiencing her son's pain in quiet sheer panic, brilliant acting by Rebecca Ferguson. The tension builds as Jessica recites the litany of fear, and Paul soon starts to gain control and is followed by the third best thing about this scene- the music. As Jessica makes her recital, Paul, seeing flashes of visions, past and present transitions from panic to control, the background music solidifies the tense nature of this scene, a brilliant work by Hans Zimmer.
